JR and the RoadKill Choir, known affectionately as “JR and the RKC” by fast talkers and highfalutin’ text-messagers,is gaining a reputation as one of the funniest bands in Nashville! Recognized for their hilarious perspective on everyday situations and some peculiar ones as well, this unpretentious band is both irreverent and mostly family-friendly. But, of course, I guess that depends on your family.
No topic is too controversial for JR and his choir to pick fun at, be it alcoholism, nepotism, or just good ol’ fashioned hedonism. (Okay, but astigmatism? Naw, there’s nothing funny about that.) Without an ounce of plagiarism but with a ton of witticism, JR puts a creative, lighthearted spin on matters that we, or at least our wacky in-laws, can all relate to. JR's style can best be described as irreverant country/americana humor and is influenced by the work of Jim Croce, Merle Haggard, Jerry Reed and whoever writes those funny songs for The Simpsons...(the tv show, NOT Jessica and Ashlee!)
Their debut CD ("Old Family Recipe") contains 11 original songs. What man hasn't lived the song:“I’m Drinkin’ You Beautiful” ?? And what woman wouldn't love to scream: “You’re Too Ugly to be Cheatin’ on Me” ?! “Shotgun Wedding” gives a whole new meaning to ‘family values'... redneck style, while “You're Kissin' A Bullfrog” might be considered a cautionary tale from that same twisted family tree. The well-known hazards of home cooking are exploited in “Our Love Grows,” but will only leave you hungry for more! You will delight in the double entendres of “He Kissed Her Lips” and be tickled by the unexpected twists that run rampant in the entire collection of tunes made almost-famous by this band. Their second CD, "Bring a Shovel" is scheduled for a release in early September.
Everything you need to know about JR can be found stuck to the floor mats of his brown 1970 Vista Cruiser station wagon. JR came to Nashville in 2002 like many a songwriter, with a guitar case full of dreams. JR credits many publishers on Music Row for the formation of his band. While confessing they loved his songs, all were hard pressed to find an artist with the guts to record any of them. It was obvious if these songs were going to reach a broader audience, be would have to record them himself. Since everything's funner (or funnier) with your drinkin' buddies along, he called some friends and the Roadkill Choir was born!
One of the band’s earliest performances was in a WSM radio contest here in Nashville. They were selected as one of 16 finalists from over 1000 entries. Their song “I’m Drinkin’ You Beautiful” had judges falling off their barstools with laughter (okay, the Rolling Rock beer helped!) JR & the RKC won the contest and got to open for Ray Price at the legendary Ryman Auditorium—the mother church of country music.
In addition to the Ryman, JR and the RKC have appeared at well known venues as The Bluebird Café, The Ford Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame, Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, and a wide range of low brow (and a few high brow) venues nationwide. They have had the privilege of opening up for Jamie O'Neal, Ray Price, Bobby Bare, Bryan White, Daryle Singletary, Catherine Britt, Linda Davis, and Steve Azar. JR and the RKC also make themselves available for corporate events and parties, so if you're in the market for a band that's sure to add a kick to even the dullest sales meeting or family reunion, check out our contact/booking tab on the main menu or click here to contact JR & the Roadkill Choir.
If you appreciate the humor of the TV shows "My Name is Earl" and "King of the Hill" or the classic (according to JR) movie "Raising Arizona", you're sure to enjoy this band.
