Review of "Old Family Recipe" from Music News Nashville
"The name of this band immediately made me say….EEEEEWWWWWW!!!!! This is a CD chock full of novelty songs, so if your looking for a good laugh, this one will do it. Unless of course you’re the woman he is drinkin’ to make beautiful.
The album's production is excellent and the songs are performed by some clever musicians executing the tunes with talent and precision. Catchy guitar licks and foot stompin’ beats grab your attention. Fellow drinkers and rednecks should really appreciate the lyrics. My favorite song was “Redneck With The White Collar Blues,” very well thought out lyrics which flow well from one verse to another and very catchy hook.
I have been in this busi ness f or quite awhile and cannot count the times I’ve been told "if you want a cut, you have to appeal to the woman driving their kids to school at 7 O’clock in the morning." Well, I’m hoping that this album wasn’t going for that appeal! But now lets give credit where credit is due. If you want a good laugh, let loose and have some fun, then crank it up. There are clever twists of everyday living in this CD. I laughed right out loud on, “You’re too Ugly to be Cheatin on Me”. I felt sorry for the lady but the song was consistent with all the other novelty songs on the CD. John Russell is a talented writer who has found his niche in novelty. If this is what he was wanting to do for his musical career then I’d say set up tent and camp out there. But I think he could do so much more. He has potential of making a lot of money in this business if he lets go of some of the novelties and shows us some sincerity.
Personally, I like the vocals, and the musicians are rocking out some killer tunes. I want to see the serious side of this guy. I think they could definitely write an interesting mixture of traditional country songs and new, upbeat feel-good tunes. With his ability to write hilarious twists of everyday living, John might try a more somber approach every now and again, and just see where it takes him. Overall I enjoyed what the CD was clearly set up to do - make me laugh. Some gut busting funny tunes, backed with talented musicians and great production are there for the listening."
