What would you get if you had The Blue Collar Boys become a touring band? You would get J.R. and The Roadkill Choir with their latest release, Bring A Shovel. “No Man Was Ever Shot Washing The Dirty Dishes” kicks off this country cavalcade of comedy as it’s full of twangy guitars, banjo and drums. It’s a hilarious story of domestic bliss gone awry.
“Shut Up And Fish” continued this undesireable married existence as it’s fully-loaded of the same tones as the previous track, but with more melody to the vocals. They get into rockabilly mode with “I’m Not Drunk Enough To Dance.” It’s so old school honky tonk that it screams redneck fun. “Talkin’ To The Dog” is just as hilarious as the last couple songs as it’s set to a bluesy rock and roll scheme that would tap your toes and make you laugh your butt off all at the same time.
“That’s Why Sometimes Daddies Need To Drink” is a tongue and cheek reference on raising children and it’s got that original Southern fried humor that is significant throughout this entire disc. Russell and his boys go sentimentally gospel with “Glory Bound” as it’s a beautifully sweet homage to mothers everywhere. “I Don’t Deserve You” is a funny account of how men never listen to their women as its set to heavy
guitars, harmonica and doo-wop style backing vocals. This release ends on a mellow note with “You’re Too Ugly To Be Cheating On Me.” If you’re a fan of Ray Stevens or Brad Paisley, you should definitely pick up a copy of Bring A Shovel.
